Student Of The Year – Dipa Karmakar appears For MA Exams The Day After Her Return From Rio

The 23-year old is India’s first female gymnast ever at the Olympics

Following her historic fourth-place finish at the Rio Olympics 2016, it would have been but natural for Dipa Karmakar to feel deserving of a break. But the 23-yr old is made of different mettle than most others as she appeared for her second semester MA exams this past Monday after returning from Rio over the weekend.

Dipa is a student of the Tripura University in Agartala, which is where she gave the exams at the Distance Learning Centre of Tripura University.

Why, you ask? “I will go home and appear for my MA exams on Monday. I think sports persons are really very intelligent and they don’t have to prepare a lot for their exams. I will get a day and will try my best to write well in the exam,” she had earlier told in an interview.

Understandably, the faculty at the University too were impressed by the dedication shown by the Olympian. “It’s a striking example to other students also. One who plays at the Olympic level can also study side by side to acquire higher education, along with her achievements in sports,” Dr KB Jamatia, Director of Distance Education at Tripura University, was quoted as saying.

Dipa won many hearts early last week with her gutsy performance at the Rio Olympics, coming fourth, missing out on a podium finish by a whisker (0.150 points). She is India’s most successful gymnast so far and is set to be awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award later this year.

Looking ahead, she has her goals clearly set.  “I will try extremely hard to get gold medals in the forthcoming Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I shall try to deliver my best in future.”

Learn from her, kids!
