Party In Rio : Inside Account Highlights The Apathy On Display By The Indian Olympic Officials

Reports abound on how the ‘accompanying’ officials are having a gala time in Rio while athletes struggle

We had run a story a few days ago on how Vijay Goel, the Indian Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, had run afoul of the Olympic games organizers with his entourage of goons flouting the official rules. However, a closer look reveals a more sorry state of affairs as Goel isn’t alone in his insensitive and ego-driven endeavors.

Accompanying him is a cast of ‘officials’ who incidentally are a part of a very large delegation of their ilk who have gone to Rio this time, with their purpose not exactly known. The scion of the Patiala family, Raninder Singh, son of Congress’ chief ministerial candidate in Punjab, Amarinder Singh, has gained infamy on Whatsapp groups, with pics of him partying while India is yet to open their medal tally.

Giving him company is Abhay Singh Chautala, son of former Haryana Chief Minister, OP Chautala. Chautala Jr is also partying in Rio, while out on bail in a disproportionate assets case, incredulously giving even the judges a slip as he never got the required permission to travel abroad.

Abhinav Bindra, who competed in his final Olympics this time, had the following to say about the on-ground happenings in Rio. “The only athletes who get supported in India by the establishment are the ones who’ve made it to the Everest level. The ones at the grassroot are left to fend for themselves. It’s only after you win, that you get any government attention. This sort of system and planning cannot produce champions”.

This comes after reports on how Dipa Karmakar’s physiotherapist was not able to travel with her. And was only ‘rushed’ to Rio after she made the finals.

Add to the Indian contingent a radiologist named Pawandeep Tony Singh, whose only solution to consulting athletes suffering from pain has been Combiflam! That he is having a gala time at the Games has been reported by all sources – hanging out by the pool, drinking from 3 pm. Doing what we all do on holiday. Only he’s there on work. Tony Singh is the son of Tarlochan Singh, who is the Vice President of the Indian Olympic Association.

Reports abound about how the IOA has taken a huge delegation of state Olympic office bearers, to garner future votes. All flown business class, while the athletes flew economy, even the limited accreditation is being given to them instead of the supporting staff.

To top all of this, the IOA president, Narayana Ramachandran has not met the athletes even once…yet.

And we wonder why India, with its population of over a billion can’t bring home a handful of medals!
