6 Best Bollywood Movies Based On Real People

Bollywood has had its share of great biopics

They say that ‘Truth is stranger than Fiction’ and so it is to nobody’s surprise that stories based on real happenings and people find their way to the silver screen. The latest in this saga is the Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Rustom’ which saw its trailer release today.

A standard Hollywood recipe, making films on real-life characters has also caught Bollywood’s fancy many a time, with the results not being consistently good. But there have been a few that have stood out from the churn that Bollywood is known for.

Bhaag Milka Bhaag


The Rakyesh Om Prakash Mehra vehicle, released in 2013, was a movie based on Indian athlete and Armyman Milkha Singh, who through his exploits, gained the nickname of ‘The Flying Sikh’

Paan Singh Tomar


This movie, directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, won talented actor Irrfan Khan a national award in 2012. The movie was based on the real-life Indian athlete-turned-Dacoit Paan Singh Tomar, who also served in the Indian Army.

No One Killed Jessica


This movie based on the real-life murder of Delhi model Jessica Lal and the subsequent efforts by her sister in getting the perpetrators behind bars, was released in 2011. The movie featured powerhouse performances by Rani Mukerjee and Vidya Balan.



A controversial movie at the time of release, Bawander was based on the real-life trauma and humiliation faced by Bhanwari Devi, a rape victim from Rajasthan. The titular character was portrayed by acclaimed actress Nandita Das.



This movie based on the real-life lawyer and activist Shahid Azmi, who was assassinated in 2010, won RajKumar Rao his first national award for Best Actor.

Bandit Queen


Probably the most controversial movie on the list, this movie directed by Shekhar Kapur was based on notorious tribal woman-turned dreaded dacoit turned politician Phoolan Devi.

The role pf Phoolan Devi was essayed by Seema Biswas, who won the national award for Best Actress for her portrayal.
