20 Essential Tips You Should Know on How to Train a Dog at Home

Dogs are indeed man’s best friend. They are amazing creatures who bring so much joy in homes. They tug at your heartstrings with their puppy dog eyes, pull on their leashes to smell flowers and are just plain endearing when they wag their tails and jump up to give you a slurpy kiss after a long day.

However, despite all their love and affection for you, they too have their own natural instincts. You could end up tearing your hair out when you find them chewing on your new shoe or pillow. Or, you may just be frustrated when you can’t get them to do the job outside.

It’s not your dog’s fault though; you need to train your dog at home. The good thing is that dogs are quick learners. With proper training, your dog will easily grasp the basic dos and don’ts. However, it’s completely up to you to train your pet. Our list of 25 tips to train your dog at home will help you do just that. Follow these tips to get your dog to follow basic commands at home. 1) Click and Treat


This is the first step in training your dog at home. Click and treat your dog with a snack. Repeat this process for 20-30 times so that your dog knows that he will be given a treat whenever he hears the click.

2) Calling Out His Name

Getting your dog to associate with his name is very important. Follow the clicker process whenever your dog looks at you. Do this for some time and then add his name just before clicking and treating. Repeat this process about 20 times. This will make your dog look up to you whenever you call out his name.

3) Sitting

Whenever your dog sits down, just click and treat. Repeat this process for some time and then start calling out “SIT” just before clicking and treating. Continue repeating this till your dog associates the “SIT” command with sitting.

4) Lying Down

Wait for your dog to lie down. When he does so, click and treat him. Repeat this several times. Eventually, add the “DOWN” command just before clicking and treating. Continue doing this until your dog lies down whenever you command him to do so.

5) Standing

Whenever your dog stands up, click and treat him. Standing comes naturally, so you might be required to repeat this process more than the others. After doing this several times, call out the “STAND” command just before clicking and treating. Repeat this process until your dog stands up when asked to do so.

6) Calling to Heel

Call out the “HEEL” command to get your dog to come to you. Give him a treat right after that. Repeat this process several times a day and praise him each time. Soon your dog will associate the command with a treat and come up to you whenever you call out the command.

7) Picking

Keep your dog’s favourite toy in front of him. Whenever he picks it up, click and treat. Repeat this process and eventually call out “PICK” just before you click. Repeat until your dog knows the command by heart.

8) Pick and Bring

After your dog has mastered the “PICK” command, wait until it comes a few steps towards you with an object and then click and treat. Do this several times and eventually call out “BRING” before clicking. Repeat this until your dog follows your command.

9) Identifying Household Items

Hold something in your hand and wait for your dog to touch it. Click and treat whenever he does so. Repeat this process and eventually add the object’s name before clicking, such as pen, ashtray, etc. Repeat this with other household items.

10) Ringing the Bell

Wait for your dog to touch the jingle-bell on the door. Click and treat. Repeat this and eventually do so while taking him out. Don’t treat, just open the door. Soon he will associate ringing the bell with opening the door.

11) Jumping Across a Stick

Place a stick on the floor, cross it and call him. Whenever your dog does so, click and treat. Repeat and keep adding height to the stick with books. When he has to jump over the stick to cross it, call out “JUMP” and then click. Soon he will jump on command.

12) Jumping Through a Hoop

Lure your dog into going through a hoop on the floor. Click and treat. Repeat and add more height to the hoop. Eventually, call out the “JUMP” and treat him whenever he jumps through the hoop. Soon he will learn the trick.

13) Spotting the Marker

Place a marker on the spot where you want your dog to be. Click and treat when he comes to the spot. Repeat this process and eventually add the marker name (tape, disk) before clicking. Over time, your dog will associate the command with the action.

14) Lifting the Paw (High Five)

Click and treat your dog whenever he lifts his paw. Continue this process for some time and then add the command “HIGH FIVE” before clicking. Repeat until your dog lifts his paw whenever asked to do so.

15) Spinning


Make a circular motion with your touch stick and reward your dog whenever he turns around following it. Repeat this process and eventually add the “SPIN” command before clicking. Soon your dog will spin whenever you ask him to do so.

16) Shaking

Whenever your dog is wet and shakes the water off, click and treat. Repeat this process and add the command “SHAKE” so that your dog associates it with shaking. Repeat this when until he follows your command.

17) Sitting Pretty

Lure your dog into lifting his paws by lifting a treat over his head. Click and treat. Repeat this and add the command “SIT PRETTY” before clicking. DO this until your dog knows this command by heart.

18) Keeping Silence

When your dog is barking, wait until it looks at you and stops. Click and treat. Repeat this process and add the word “HUSH” before clicking. Go for longer spans of silence each time while doing this.

19) Tugging

Call out the “PICK” command for a rope toy and hold the other end. Wait until your dog gives a tug and then click and treat. Repeat this adding the command “TUG”. Remember to do the opposite—reward him as he lets go and eventually add the command “GIVE” to it.

20) Opening A Door

Tie a cloth around your door and command your dog to “TUG”. Click and treat him when he tugs and opens the door. Repeat this process, eventually calling out “OPEN” before the reward. Your dog will naturally associate the command with the action in a matter of time.

21) Bringing Something

Call out the “PICK” command for a rope toy and when your dog approaches you with it, command him to “FETCH”. Toss it away a few feet, call out “FETCH” and click and treat whenever your dog picks it up and brings it to you.

22) Yawning

Get your dog excited and hold a toy that he wants. This will make him yawn. Click and treat quickly. Repeat this for some time before adding the command “YAWN” to it. Your dog will follow your command in a matter of time.

23) Bring Slippers

Teach your dog the name “SLIPPERS” when you are teaching him names of household items. Command him to “PICK” it up and bring it to you. Click and treat whenever he does so. Repeat this process and add the command “BRING MY SLIPPERS” so that he gets acquainted with it.

24) Catching

Throw a treat and wait for your dog to catch it. When he does so, treat him with more rewards. Practice this and see whether your dog catches it well. Increase the distance gradually and command “CATCH”. Repeat the process with balls.

25) The Ashamed Act

Put some sticky tape on your dog’s nose and he will automatically paw it. Click and treat when he does so. Continue doing so and then remove the tape when he identifies the treat with rubbing his paws on his nose.  Put in a command such as “ASHAMED” and repeat the process.
